On the Path to Wellness

Let me start with telling you a brief story…

 

“Once upon a time in a far away land there was a little girl. This little girl lived happily enjoying delicious dishes, from pizza to hamburgers; this little girl loved all types of food. As time went by this little girl grew up into a young woman, many years have passed and after many many years of relishing in all kind of foods something very strange happened! She started feeling ill, itchy bumps here and there. Soon itchy bumps everywhere.

She seeked the magic of her fairy god-doctor but much to her surprise the magic did not work. All hope was soon lost and this young woman was left to her own devices. What what she to do next??…” To Be Continued!

Ok – Confession time…

The young woman in the story is ME! Yes, I know predictable. However I wanted to make a dramatic entrance 😉 I grew up being a picky eater, but I loved all of the “normal” foods most every kid loves. Pizza, Hamburgers, Rice, Bread, Pasta, Sweets (lots of sweets). As I grew older my plate got more sophisticated but still, I ate what people would call a normal American Diet. I had everything I wanted to eat to my heart’s content. But about two years ago I developed a gluten sensitivity that presented itself by way of itchy bumps on my arms, hands and feet.

Like any other person I went to get tested for various allergies and nothing came back. Basically I was doomed to have these itchy red bumps show up and all I could do is put some kind of anti itch cortizone cream that my doctor recommended and take Benadryl (even though it didn’t do anything but make me sleepy). It was a sad time in my life, I felt so confused about what was going on I wondered it I would only have to look forward to a life on medicine and itchy red bumps FOREVER. I tried everything, switching my detergent, my bath soap, shampoo, perfume, clothes etc. Nothing worked. So I took matters into my own hands. I did some reasearch and found “The Paleo Diet”.

 

Holy cow was this a discovery!! As I read more and more about the Paleo lifestyle and how much certain foods really didn’t do much good to the body. I took the cold turkey approach and eliminated all types of allergen foods – Nuts, Legumes, Dairy, Soy, Sugar and Gluten. This was POWERFUL! Everything from nasal stuffiness, to my acid reflux and itchy bumps cleared up! My energy went up and I felt great! Only thing was I missed all those things I eliminated, and well what good is it to feel great if I felt badly about not having those foods. So as I reintroduced these foods to my diet I noticed how my body would react to them if I could tolerate them or not.  Low and behold as soon as I started to reintroduce Gluten i started feeling sluggish again and my skin started to get a few bumps here and there, and as soon as I introduced sugar. My itchy red bumps came back full force!

 

BINGO! Gluten and Sugar – the two culprits for my misery! Now knowing that I had to definitely get rid of those two things. I went full speed ahead with Paleo.  What is Paleo? It’s a lifestyle more than a “diet” where you focus on eating clean- No Sugar, No Gluten, No Legumes, No Soy. There are other “No-No’s” in the Paleo lifestyle but I was happy to give them up as long as I could eat Dairy.  I followed the Paleo Way for a good 6-8 months until my Wedding Day. That day I fell off the boat and didn’t look back. With my new found knowledge I gave myself more slack to eat how “normal” people eat. But it started backfiring. A couple of months ago I noticed that I didn’t like how I felt, or how I looked. My skin, my hair, how my clothes fit, my energy alllll just awful.  So my obvious course of action: Go back to Paleo. It wasn’t enough! What gives??

 

I’m no spring chicken anymore!! I know I’m not very old but I’m almost 30 and with that comes a lot of changes. Hormones are changing, metabolism, collagen, etc! We all know that the body goes through changes and well this is a big one. With this in mind I have decided to take on a more “hardcore diet” the Keto Diet.  Like the Paleo Diet, it focuses on clean eating, however Keto has two differences 1. It focuses on a Low Carb approach and 2. It focuses on fueling your body on FAT. Yes, you read correctly, FAT!

 

I won’t go into the intricate science behind Keto, however I will say that I am a couple of weeks in and though I went through the dreaded “Keto Flu” I feel great! I am really enjoying the food that I eat and how it makes me feel.
